Hiking, Backpacking & Camping With German Shepherds
Trail-Ready German Shepherds
Shepherd Expedition™ helps you and your German Shepherd become more capable and confident outdoors, whether you’re heading out for a day hike, an overnight backpacking trip, or traveling farther from home together. Here you’ll find practical guidance on dog training, canine fitness, nutrition, outdoor skills, safety, and responsible recreation, built from real experience.
Shepherd Expedition was created by Lara Mahr, a Certified Dog Trainer with decades of experience living with German Shepherds and exploring the outdoors. Her background in dog training, canine fitness, endurance sports, emergency response, and Leave No Trace education all come together here.
Hiking With German Shepherds
Learn how to acclimate your dog to hiking, build reliable trail manners including leash skills and impulse control around other hikers and wildlife, and choose routes that match your dog’s age, abilities, and conditioning. You’ll also learn to read your dog’s body language on the move and recognize when your dog may need a break. Whether you’re planning a short first hike or a full-day outing, these guides help you and your German Shepherd develop the skills, communication, and confidence to explore together.

Built for Any Dog on the Trail
German Shepherds and other pointy-eared breeds are at the heart of Shepherd Expedition, but you don’t have to own a German Shepherd to belong here. The fundamentals of communicating with your dog, building reliable skills, preparing for the conditions, and making responsible decisions outdoors apply to dogs of all breeds and mixed breeds.
Topics We Cover
German Shepherd Training
Shepherd Expedition offers practical guidance for the real world beyond the backyard. Learn the skills your dog needs to navigate trails, handle distractions, and become a more confident and capable outdoor companion.
Canine Fitness & Nutrition
Strength and conditioning help build the stamina hiking and backpacking demand, while proper nutrition supports an active lifestyle and healthy muscles and joints. Learn how to prepare your dog gradually and recognize the importance of working within your dog’s individual abilities.
Camping & Travel
Shepherd Expedition offers advice for taking your dog farther from home, including car and RV travel, camping routines, preparation, and the practical considerations that come with exploring new places together.
Responsible Recreation
Respect for other trail users, wildlife, and the land is central to everything we do at Shepherd Expedition. Learn to enjoy the outdoors safely and responsibly, guided by Leave No Trace principles.
On Leash Activities
A leash isn’t a limitation. It’s a safety tool. It keeps your dog connected to you when wildlife is present, another dog approaches, a hiker comes around a blind corner, or the trail suddenly becomes hazardous. Keeping dogs on leash also helps protect sensitive ecological areas and gives other trail users space to enjoy the outdoors.
Leash requirements vary by park and trail, and individual locations may have additional restrictions. Always check the rules before heading out.
At Shepherd Expedition, we believe the freedom to explore outdoor spaces with dogs comes with responsibility. Our activities are conducted on leash because responsible recreation means protecting dogs, people, wildlife, and the environment we enjoy. This approach aligns with Leave No Trace principles.
