Looking for something beyond the typical dog training session? Shepherd Expedition offers small-group guided hikes and backpacking experiences with dogs for people who want to become more confident, capable, and responsible outdoor partners.
These guided hiking experiences are currently offered in select areas of Southwestern Michigan and are designed to combine practical dog training with real-world outdoor skills.
Guided Hiking & Backpacking Groups are open to dogs of all breeds and mixed breeds. German Shepherds are at the heart of Shepherd Expedition, but every dog deserves the opportunity to learn, explore, and enjoy the outdoors.
During our guided hikes, we’ll work on practical skills such as trail manners, leash handling, conditioning, outdoor gear, situational awareness, and responsible recreation. We’ll hike together, learn along the way, and discuss the skills that help people and their dogs navigate trails safely and thoughtfully.
Each outing will take place on a carefully selected trail with a manageable pace and opportunities to practice skills, ask questions, and simply enjoy being outdoors with your dog.
Dog Equipment Guidelines
Guided Hiking Groups use positive-reinforcement training methods. Only humane, reward-based training methods and equipment are permitted.
These guidelines are required for safety, liability, and insurance purposes. Equipment standards are designed with an emphasis on safe, humane handling and positive reinforcement.
Permitted Equipment
- Flat collars
- Standard harnesses
- Front-clip or back-clip harnesses
- Standard fixed-length leashes no longer than 6 feet
- Dog backpacks, when appropriate and used safely
Prohibited Equipment
The following equipment is not permitted during Shepherd Expedition guided hikes:
- Choke chains
- Prong or pinch collars
- E-collars or shock collars
- Retractable leashes or Flexi-style leads
- Equipment designed to deliver aversive stimulation or corrections
- Other specialty equipment that does not meet Shepherd Expedition’s safety standards
Participants are expected to use training methods consistent with positive reinforcement throughout the outing. Shepherd Expedition reserves the right to ask a participant to discontinue the use of equipment or training methods that do not meet these guidelines.
Human Equipment Guidelines
Participants should arrive prepared for the weather, terrain, and conditions expected during the hike. Wear sturdy, comfortable footwear appropriate for the trail and weather conditions, along with clothing suitable for changing outdoor conditions. Avoid open-toed shoes, sandals, or other footwear that does not provide adequate protection and traction for the planned activity.
Participants should also carry the Ten Essentials, as recommended by the National Park Service. The Ten Essentials are a minimum preparedness guideline, not a complete packing list. Additional equipment may be necessary depending on the season, weather, terrain, distance, and location of the outing.

Safety & Participation Requirements
Human participants must be at least 18 years old, and participating dogs must be at least 18 months old.
The safety of every person and dog is a priority. Participants are expected to follow Shepherd Expedition guidelines, use appropriate equipment, and maintain reasonable control of their dogs throughout the outing.
Dogs participating in a group hike should be comfortable enough around people and other dogs to safely participate in a group outdoor setting. Dogs with significant aggression, severe reactivity, or other behavior concerns that cannot be safely managed in a group environment may not be appropriate for this service.

Guided Hiking & Backpacking With Dogs
Each group is intentionally kept small so participants have opportunities to ask questions, practice skills, and receive practical guidance along the way.

- Small-group guided hiking format

- Trail and difficulty information provided before the hike
$25 per person, per guided hike
Space is limited to keep the group manageable and provide a positive learning experience for both people and dogs.
